What's the biggest real-life hurdle to your fiction-writing? Is it lack of time from school or work, family obligations, health, or is it an internal problem such as lack of motivation or inability to manage time? I suspect that for a lot of us the answer is some combination. Feel free to discuss in as much or as little detail as you'd like, and members, remember this is a public post!

I have a fairly major deadline coming up this week on the same project (the thesis for my degree) that has stymied my fiction-writing progress for months now. It's not like I spend every waking moment on the thesis, but I do find it hard to find the presence of mind to work for any length of time on the story other than daydreaming and turning things over in my head. Now playing Candy Crush (Saga because I am an old fogie) and wasting time on Tumblr, that's where it's at.

I think this is one of those things that I have to power through to come out on the other side. And I do have a lot of affection for my thesis and want to get good results. After months of difficulty I finally think I can make a meaningful contribution and want to make it the best work I can. So the novel will have to wait a little, but I certainly won't be sorry to be done with the thesis so I can get some writing done on my fiction projects, including the novel and some long-dormant fanfics.

For me I think it's just things getting in the way. I was just asked at the end of last week to do a write-up about my business trip to California. I also have stuff to memorize by Wednesday, which isn't a big deal because they're practically the same exact lines as before. But I just started working on the writing project a few minutes ago. I've never really done anything in Pages except for reading some stuff, so I immediately thought why not use Pages for this project? So I went to another site and had another quick read of a tutorial about Pages, and I think everything this guy said is correct. Thus far I'm impressed with it, and everything is fully accessible with the screen reader on here which is definitely a positive.

My distractions are a combination of work, fic writing and life in general. Work is becoming more difficult to juggle the older I get because I'm finding it difficult to justify the daily grind and the amount of time it sucks up. Aside from the pay check, it doesn't reward me any other way.

I've recently started writing MCU fanfic and of course it's taken over my life and the time I would have once devoted to writing my novel. I can't really complain though because I'm having fun doing it.

The more I think about it though, the more time I can come up with to write. If only I got off social media!

ENERGY. Having a full time job and an autoimmune disease (well, two, but they tend to come and go together), sometimes I just can't write.

And other times, I might be able to push through, but I'm not sure, so I try, and either it works (yay!) or it fails miserably and I fall into a total slump.

Precarious energy levels mean I'm also vulnerable to random changes -- like, when I broke my foot in late March, simply getting around was so draining that I did very little writing. (Or, in fact, very little of my actual job, either.)

Right now everything is a distraction, because I'm tired and need to sleep more. :(
